Hainaults "Japan Inc." was inspired
by an antique recording of Japanese hostesses playing a singing game with
some clinets in a bar. The track was built around this, and many layers
of samples were superimposed on the beat to make a thick, runaway train
of relentlessly pounding house funk, with authentic Japanese opera percussion,
and a dreamy "Float on" remix, which seduces and hypnotises
the listener as it builds and falls.
This "magpie manipulation", or "Treasure Trove
Tampering" has been well exploited now; Hainault was one of the
earliest exponents of what could be called a "restrained kitchen
sink approach". Back |
